L’Enfant Terrible

I love a fashion exhibition, as you may have gathered and Jean Paul Gaultier at Barbican turned out to be one of the best I have seen. Freedom to take photographs and sharing the experience with Kate Maison Bentley Style made for a fashionistas day full of fabulousness indeed!

We were treated to a visual feast and much laughter as mannequins and JPG himself smiled and chatted to us……Kate has evidence of this on her blog.

20140511-144454.jpg
I took around 100 photos so will share some of my favourites…..

Artists Textiles

Seems a while ago now since I went to see this exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in South London. I shared the day with the 3 girls I used to share a studio with, 2 of whom are surface pattern designers,so we were all keen to see what was on display……we were not disappointed! And photography was allowed…Hurrah.

Delightful headscarves from Marcel Vertes in 1945 were so vibrant…

The following 2 designs are from Zandra Rhodes who set up the Fashion and Textile Museum herself.

This design put me in mind of the opening credits of Mad Men. Can’t quite imagine Don Draper holding a bunch of balloons though!

This was one of Zandras designs for her degree show in 1964.

I loved this vibrant print from John Rombola. It dates from the 60s but it’s so similar in colour and playfulness to some of Ikea’s fabrics available today….

20140425-105057.jpg
……such as this little beauty I bought recently…..it’s going to be a skirt….before you ask!
To finish here are a couple of detail images from my favourite Circus by John Rombola. The exhibition runs until May 17th so see it if you can.

Sorry for the delay in reporting back on my first vintage fair of the year but it took me a while to come back down to earth after my most successful fair ever! Great way to start my year eh? Big thank you to all who wished me luck….it worked!!

20140326-112859.jpg
This was my pitch….bit of improvising as we weren’t supplied with tables this time and I already had my hands and shoulders full so couldn’t carry one. People seemed to enjoy having a rummage around the floor as well as looking through rails so it worked well. The sun shone on us all day and I sold lots of everything, met lovely people…..among them Mrs Fox Finery, who bought a dress from me. So great when the blogosphere brings us all together! I had no chance to leave my stall so only have a few images to share…..

20140326-113643.jpg
This gorgeous girl loved her Hollie Hobbie dress and wore it very well I think you’ll agree….

20140326-113914.jpg
And this little cutie went off wearing her new dress on top of the one she arrived in! Nice!

20140326-114156.jpg
Walter the Rolls Royce was my neighbour for the day and went home with two of my Scottish cushions as that’s where his owner had found him.

20140326-114616.jpg
All round it was a fabulous day and I went home tired but happy. It feels so good when some of the coolest people you will ever meet love what you create and then want to give you money for it!…..roll on the next!

How I love London! It’s always inspiring….has many hidden gems and never fails to excite me. However, there are some areas that have just become tacky with a glut of souvenir tat and it breaks my heart to think there must be some tourists who only see these areas on their visit to our great city. Imagine my surprise then when I turned the corner at the end of Regent St last Friday afternoon to see how Xmas has landed in Piccadilly Circus.

20131217-145707.jpg
The statue of Eros has become a snow globe! I particularly loved the reflections of the neon signs and the way the buildings have become distorted. What fun!…..and then on to Leicester Sq and wow!!!

20131217-150051.jpg
My jaw dropped! How did they get a full size Ferris wheel in there? I have never seen this space look so beautiful. Anyway….the photos say it better than I can. Enjoy….and go see if you get the chance.

Feathery Fabulousness

Just had to share this. Anthropologie does it again!

20131022-095251.jpg
This fabulous feathery display is on show in the Regent St store….well it was a couple of weeks ago. In my former life I used to make feather fascinators and these guinea fowl feathers were always my favourite to work with. They take dye very well with the colour filling the white spots.

20131022-095932.jpg
…anyway…I digress…. Here is the feathery installation in all its glory!

20131022-100337.jpg

20131022-100403.jpg
On close inspection it seems that each feather has been pierced with a needle thru the center spine and threaded by hand onto nylon thread. That’s a lot of hours work! I hope you get a chance to see it. And of course while I was in the store I took a few more images from around this palace of joy and inspiration. Enjoy!

Sunshine,South Bank and much Vintage Attitude

Saturday saw me at The Classic Car Boot Sale on London’s South Bank. What a fabulous day it was….in every way….because after a nerve shredding day of rain on Friday I set off very early on Saturday morning with much trepidation and lots of polythene sheeting! But someone was on our side because as I stepped out of Waterloo station, the sun was shining and the sky was blue. Hurrah!

20131014-153026.jpg
My stall was soon set up with fellow up-cyclers and next to an adorable little Fiat from 1972.

Here are some images I managed to get.

I was very restrained and didn’t buy any clothes but when I saw this I could not resist….

I grew up with this magazine rack in our living room and have vivid memories of trying to say the French words as a child. It used to hold The Radio Times I seem to remember but I think it’s perfect for some of my vinyl collection….French music, of course.
